A decade ago, Food Fur Life was created in the middle of an avian flu outbreak. Avian flu is not new and the highly pathogenic form dates to 2005. The testing protocols of not just avian flu, but the numerous contaminants common in the food chain supply of our human grade manufacturer and the human grade source materials used in our premix were primary factors in our relationship decision. Testing protocols of this manufacturer have kept humans and pets safe: they have a no recalls of any kind for any reason in their multi-decade history of production for national and international organizations, not just small companies like Food Fur Life.
1) The food ingredients in EZComplete premixes are human grade and tested for avian flu, including specifically H5N1, the highly pathogenic avian influenza (also known as "HPAI"). Of course, this is in addition to all of the other contaminant testing, and this means each ingredient as appropriate, each batch. The testing is done by one of the world's largest independent labs as a third-party provider to our human nutraceutical cGMP manufacturer with NSF certification. 2) In addition to the specific testing, the chicken liver, egg yolk and eggshell used in EZComplete are each U.S.-sourced and human grade from commercial scale farms. This means they are subject to the highest safety standards of the USDA, which some raw feeders may laugh at, but the USDA is confident the protocols in place prevent meat or poultry with H5N1 from entering the commercial retail marketplace. Clearly it has been successful so far, as this is the first time avian flu has come to the attention of the meat buying retail public feeding their pets raw, species-appropriate food. The failure - the exposure - is people feeding raw milk, which is not recommended by the USDA and functions outside of the regulatory authorities. Notably, there is a widely publicized report of the death of a cat by a frozen raw food maker that uses human grade meats and treats the product with High Pressure Pasteurization. But the Oregon Department of Agriculture has now addressed the many questions regarding the recall: they tested both unopened packages and the open sample. ONLY the open sample tested positive. Given 1 million further pounds of turkey were processed at the same (human grade plant with human grade meat) and the same lot of turkey food was on the market for three months prior with no other reports of even illness, and the open sample is the ONLY one that tested positive (unopened samples did not), it seems clear the bag of food that tested positive was contaminated after being open. This means it is briefly hot, but it is not treated to the temperatures nor for the time required at those temperatures to kill avian flu. Thus, the observed testing protocols discussed above to ensure the product safe. The eggs are pasteurized, which means the shells and yolk are heat treated appropriately to kill avian flu (and other biological contaminants). 4) EZComplete is designed to make raw or cooked meats nutritionally complete and balanced per AAFCO nutrient guidelines. If you are concerned with the commercial meat supplies available to you or you prefer to use meats of smaller, local farms that are not required to observe the same safety protocols as larger commercial farms, you can, of course, cook the boneless meat to make balanced homemade food. Instructions on how to properly make food with EZComplete using cooked meat are on the packages and on the website, in the "How To" sections for Cats or Dogs: How to Prepare and Feed EZComplete fur Cats How to Prepare and Feed EZComplete fur Dogs
