Do we really need any reasons to hug our cats? Of course not!

But if you’d like to know the many benefits of hugging your kitty, read on, as bonding with our kitties is just one of many.

  • Kitty hugs are a mood lifter! Hugs release good-feeling hormones dopamine, endorphins and serotonin. These promote pleasure, reduce depression, and ease pain. Nothing better than a kitty hug after a long, stressful day!
  • Kitty hugs improve your health and lower your stress! A kitty hug a day keeps the doctor away. This may be truer than you think: research indicates hugging releases the “feel good” hormone oxytocin, a neurostimulator that acts on the limbic system, the brain’s emotional center. This promotes feelings of contentment, reduces anxiety and stress, and lowers your heart rate and cortisol levels. Cortisol is the hormone responsible for stress, high blood pressure, and heart disease. In fact, research done at the University of Minnesota found that cat owners are 40 percent less likely to have a heart attack.

  • Kitty hugs improve your immune system! Holding and hugging your kitty stimulates the thymus gland, responsible for balancing the body’s production of infection-fighting white blood cells, helping to keep us healthy.
  • The healing power of the purr! In searching for how and why cats purr, it was a surprise (to some) that the sonic frequency emitted by a kitty purr actually accelerates healing and reduces pain. Our kitties share their healing powers with us with every purr, so hug your kitty (or just share your lap) when you could use a purring nurse.

  • Kitty hugs provide positive feedback! Cats are considered by some to be antisocial, but in reality they’re not aloof at all. Touch is a powerful sense to our kitties. Hugging as a display of love empowers our kitties and promotes self-esteem. The more attention and positive reinforcement they receive, the less likely they are to display destructive, attention-seeking behavior.

Remember - hugging is caring. The act of hugging is a nonverbal way of expressing the love you feel for your kitty. The more love you show, the more you will get in return.  So hug your cat every day, and feed your kitty homemade food made with EZcomplete, the food that feels like a hug.
